  • Mala-Tam is pansexual.
  • Mala-Tam is not into dominance games.
  • Mala-Tam is not into things that would not be allowed on your average porn sites.
  • Mala-Tam is not going to be happy if you try to mind control her deliberately, but will (eventually) forgive you if you didn't know you were doing it.
  • Mala-Tam is never going to forgive you if you play any kind of prank on her regarding her lightsaber.

The Rodian looked over his shoulder at the worker, as the ship's lock opened.

[[ You sure you want to get out here? This is no place for anyone to visit.]]

"I'm sure. How long will you be here?" The woman adjusted her hood. "With luck, I won't be here very long."

[[A day, at most. I don't like hanging out in Zitontown, and I wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for that special cargo. I'll wait until this time tomorrow, and then I'm gone.]]

Mala-Tam nodded. "I'll see you before then, or not." Then she walked out and down the ramp, into the heat of Mustafar.

The trip back up was without incident, as was the flight in the speeder back to the landing platform.

[[ You made it, ]] Bolosolartis said, surprise in his voice.  [[ Did you find what you were looking for? ]]

"Yes, I did. And a little something for you."  Mala-Tam dipped into a pouch, then threw Bolo a gem.  He caught it reflexively, then glanced at it.

[[ What's this for? ]]

"I owe you. Takeoff soon?"

[[ Yes. I have a cargo to take to Eriador. You coming? ]]

"Nowhere else to go. I'm going to go lie down for a bit. Let me know when you need a hand."

Mala-Tam Zarraat was born on a small world in what is known as Unknown Space about 15 years after the destruction of the first Death Star. Her world, Caeliath, had been settled centuries before, after the Great Hyperspace War, by an offshoot of the Sith. They believed that the ways of the Sith could be used for the good of others, not the corrupt ways of the Sith Empire, and were exiled for what was called heresy, running before they were executed.

They struggled with passion and the Dark Side, trying to balance the light and dark, to reconcile the powers and methods of the Jedi and the Sith. Some succeeded, some failed. All were learned from by the next generation. And so the generations passed.

As they did, others came to the world - questers after knowledge, those who felt the pull of the Force, refugees and accidental travelers. Not all who came knew the Force, but they brought news and knowledge of the greater galaxy.

One of the groups was a group of Chiss exiles, sent from the Ascendency for their sensitivity to the Force and resistance to serving in the manner of the Ascendency. By that time, Caeliath had become a myth in the Unknown Regions, a refuge for some. The elements of a dozen different Force traditions besides the Jedi and Sith left their mark on the training. A few generations later, into the clan Zaarratt, a child was born of the mixed human and Chiss blood: Mala-Tam (or in the Chiss format, Malat’amzaar’raat). She was born with the sensitivity to the Force many had, and was stronger than most.

At the age of two, she was apprenticed to Master Torqom Voq, and began her training. Unlike the Jedi, she was not separated from her parents, and until the age of ten, she breakfasted and had her evening-meal and slept in her parents home.

Master Voq, a Zabrak, took up her training in physical skills and meditation, graduating her to basic lightsaber training and, in a way she found curious, cooking. Through these, she plumbed the mysteries of the Force in ways that fit her particular set of talents.

While Caeliath had the students and masters of a dozen Force traditions, it was not rich in some resources. One of these was crystals she could use to build her own lightsaber. The next time a trader came to Caeliath, she left on it to find her own crystal and build her lightsaber.

She emerged into the Outer Rim to find that the Empire had fallen, and the First and Final Orders after it.  There had been an attempt to recreate the Jedi, and they, too. had gone away.  Not speaking the words “Jedi” or “Sith”, she posed as a wandering refugee from a world that the First Order had devastated.

It took a year to find the crystal, on a small, barren, burning world used by some smugglers as a base (and the former fortress of Darth Vader), in a remote part of the Outer Rim. Over the course of a week, she aligned the crystal through the Force, infusing it with her emotions and her will, then placing it into the housing with the power of the Force.  And then, with her new lightsaber hung from her belt, she made her way off-planet and into a greater galaxy, to search for her own path and any lost knowledge she could bring back to her homeworld.

Powers and abilities: Mala-Tam is trained in a Sith-adjacent Force tradition, with the powers one can achieve when one is strong in the Force.  She is an expert duelist with her lightsaber, which she constructed herself. She is also strong in its telekinetic and sensory talents, being able to lift large objects slowly, or move smaller ones faster, depending on her emotional state.

She also has considerable skill in a form of Sith force manipulation referred to as “Alchemy”, which allows her to manipulate and reconstruct items in unusual ways with the correct items to mix together. She also knows how to use it to create elixirs to help someone recover quickly from wounds, diseases, and poisons, but they usually have some minor side effects (discoloration of the wounded area for a few days, a diminished sense of smell for a few days, excessive perspiration for the cure of a poison or disease, or perhaps the temporary dyeing of the tongue and fingernails of an unusual color.)

As a result of her master’s opinions in training, she is also a gourmet cook.

Her training in lightsaber combat is primarily in what the Jedi referred to as Form VII, or Vaapad, an aggressive style focused on attack and quick wins. (The best known user of this style was Jedi Master Mace Windu.) She also has been trained in the styles called Shii-Cho and Ataru, specifically to make sure she would be able to survive.

She is absolute crap at the psychic manipulation powers of the Sith and the Jedi, partially from a lack of talent with that particular part of it and partially because she believes strongly in the idea of the Sith Code, which talks about how use of the Force brings freedom, to the point she finds it distasteful to even consider using it.

Mala-Tam has yet to try to use some powers, including things like the Force Lightning known to be used by many Sith. She may just never have been angry enough to use it… yet.

Weaknesses: due to her training, she’s terrible at diplomacy and negotiation, and doesn’t understand bartering at all. (Why, does she think, don’t people just say how much things cost, is that so hard?) Her temper can flare when she gets frustrated or discouraged, which can be problematic in a Force user. She is a creature of passions, so can be distracted by a particularly good looking person, or an item she decides she wants. And if you try to take her orange-bladed lightsaber, she will remember you and she will hunt you down, even if you give it back.

The splinter cult of the Sith that Mala-Tam was raised in believes in an ancient version of the Sith teachings.

They do, for example, believe in the Sith Code:
Peace is a lie. There is only Passion.
Through Passion I gain Strength.
Through Strength I gain Power.
Through Power I gain Victory.
Through Victory my chains are Broken.
The Force shall free me

However, the freedom they seek is to live life on their particular terms, instead of being free of any form of morality. (It's a very slim line.)

They also follow an ancient set of Sith precepts:

Zon: The passion which drives us. The Sith way is to commit ourselves to that passion and let the resulting energy fuel our pursuits—but when taken to excess, it becomes merely an excuse for random violence. Lashing out blindly, until you are nothing but an animal.

Rakh: Strength. Physical, yes, but also strength of spirit. Strength of mind. Strength of restraint. Strength of body alone is useful only for dull brutality. True strength is not measured in swipes of a blade or blows of a fist. It comes of bettering oneself.

Krath: Power. The true Sith gathers power, but not for its own sake. That power is used to face oppression. To defend their home. To strike those who have earned their wrath through their actions or corruptions. By seeing power as a means to an end, the failed aspirant will only find himself destroyed by it.

Kharai: Immediacy. Know the path and act at once; do not allow the moment of necessity to pass in self-doubtful hesitation. Those seeking shortcuts will omit the first step and simply act. To do so without forethought is the path to failure.

Re't: Adaptation — or flexibility, in some translations. The ability to approach any situation with an open mind, and the flexibility to change your course as you understand everything around you. The failed aspirant will twist this into deception and deceit. They believe they are fooling their opponents by living within a web of illusion, but instead they merely deceive themselves.

Zekh: Pride — the confidence that comes of knowing one is held to a higher standard. This is one of the hardest of the Virtues for many aspirants to master. Assuming yourself to be infallible — falling into the grip of arrogance—will lead to your downfall.

Nakhai: Certainty. The Sith must understand the need to act, and have the determination to do what is necessary. A cancer must be cut out. A forest must sometimes burn to allow for new growth. But just as kharai can lead to rash action, nakhai can be twisted to callous ruthlessness. Action taken to extremes for no reason. A surgeon cannot operate with a dull axe; forest fires are not meant to amuse onlookers. The true Sith does not raze a city to strike at a single denizen. This is the mark of the weakest mind.

Gan. The focus which carries us forward as we follow our path. Concentration on the moment, but ever mindful of all that comes before us, and all which must follow. To obsess upon a single act is the path of madness. When you walk the path of the Sith, if you once lose sight of the Living Force around us, you may well succeed at a single battle, but you will have lost the larger war.

This is a meditation that they use:

"There is a fire within that cannot be quenched, a fire of passion and instinct. This fire burns in all beings—it is fundamental to consciousness and life itself. Sorrow, joy, anger, love, fear: they cause suffering, but they also enable us to triumph over suffering.

"Some fear their inner fire and suppress it, even strive in vain to extinguish it. They misunderstand it and call it darkness. Others revel so in its embrace that they become its slaves and are destroyed. Only a very few possess the strength, the courage, and the will to be its master.

"Concentrate on those inner passions, that flame within you. Let its heat warm you. Let its light illuminate your world. In this way you know the fire of the universe itself: living, loving, warring, conquering, surviving.

"All life is flame. All life is one.

"This is the Force."

Caeliath, a planet in the Unknown Regions. Settled in the days after the Hundred Years Darkness by a group who believed that rejecting the light side of the Force completely was as much a failure to embrace its full range of power as limiting study to the light side, they moved on before the pure darksiders of the Sith Order exterminated them.

While they had limited contact with the rest of the galaxy, it was enough to know to stay hidden during the fall of the Republic, the Clone Wars, and the Galactic Empire. Their knowledge and plumbing for it in both the light and the dark sides of the Force, and their distance from the Galactic core, and their lack of desire to get involved, all seemed to keep the eye of the Emperor and his agents from seeing them... or perhaps they just were low on the list of targets.
